Connecting research with management
The iSimangaliso MPA Research Network connects researchers and managers working in and around the Marine Protected Area. It also creates stronger links with conservation organisations and community partners.
The network exists to improve coordination and reduce duplicated effort. It also helps turn research into useful support for MPA management.
IMRN grew from Bridging the Gap: Strengthening Research, Management and Community Alliances in South Africa’s Largest Coastal Marine Protected Area. The project is supported through the Partnerships for Innovative Research in Africa programme of Michigan State University’s Alliance for African Partnership.
The initial PIRA partnership brought together Michigan State University, the University of Pretoria and Sharklife Conservation Group. The network is being co-developed with the iSimangaliso Wetland Park Authority, which serves as its research and monitoring partner.
